After the original ideology of constructivism was developed and generalized in Bauhaus, the Haus am Horn by Georg Muche was designed in the first Bauhaus exhibition. In the year 1923, this was used as a model for expressing the idea of constructivism. The concept of simple and mechanism needed to be clearly identified throughout the whole design. The shape of the house was designed in a normal square. This was done to express the minimum. This also reinforced concrete that was used as the material to composite the main structure. Inside the house, the room was divided into different parts.
However, it was all in square this created a strong spatial felling. According to Georg, each room had its own purpose and no room supplement the function of the other room. When comparing this to the Sommerfeld House, a clear difference between two houses because of the two different concepts can be comprehended. The main materials changed had changed from the use of wood into concrete. Woods were natural materials with the warm tone. However concrete was cold toned material, which more likely expressed the feeling of mechanism. Added to this, a change in the form and the shape of two houses can be observed. The Haus am Horn had made as a simple square without any further useless ornamentation outside.
However, the designers were more concerned with decorations on the Sommerfeld House. The whole building was combined with many different elements, including many uneven facades, and a well-designed sliding roof. The interior of the house was designed with as many decorations as ones outside. As a craft-based art piece, The Sommerfeld house combined painting, sculpture and many other types of art. By contrast, The Haus am Horn was designed based on the function and application of each room. For example, the biggest room in the house was planned as the living room, which also contained many functional designs for this specific room. In addition, the furniture was devised to connect the idea of minimum and mechanism, such as the armchair which was first designed to have a cantilevered frame.
