Subsidy is an instrument which has been misused to a large extent, where there is no law and might supress and eliminate the ill effects of subsidies and the trade distortion it continues to create (Brown, 2015). A domestic Indian farmer, capable of selling cotton to its sellers for an amount that renders him profit, must not give in to illogical and irrational trade practices. There is no reason why he should give in to global market forces that disturb his ability to profit. The act of subsidy is not an act that can become a universal law, because it simply polarises economic profit, farmers’ sustainable ability, and the very means of their existence (Wood, 2011).
On the one hand, the US subsidies enable the economic enrichment of its cotton farmers through subsidy payments and policies that encourage distorted market penetration, and on the other hand, India farmers are affected by US subsidies as they cannot compete with cheaper cotton imports from US (Herdin and Hofbauer, 2006). Thus, the act fails the test of the categorical imperative principle, and hence must be abandoned with immediate effect. WTO, which also remains a global body of prominence, is unable to give in to subsidy abolishment.
