Subsidy is an instrument which has been misused to a large extent, where there is no law and might supress and eliminate the ill effects of subsidies and the trade distortion it continues to create (Brown, 2015). A domestic Indian farmer, capable of selling cotton to its sellers for an amount that renders him profit, must not give in to illogical and irrational trade practices. There is no reason why he should give in to global market forces that disturb his ability to profit. The act of subsidy is not an act that can become a universal law, because it simply polarises economic profit, farmers’ sustainable ability, and the very means of their existence (Wood, 2011).
On the one hand, the US subsidies enable the economic enrichment of its cotton farmers through subsidy payments and policies that encourage distorted market penetration, and on the other hand, India farmers are affected by US subsidies as they cannot compete with cheaper cotton imports from US (Herdin and Hofbauer, 2006). Thus, the act fails the test of the categorical imperative principle, and hence must be abandoned with immediate effect. WTO, which also remains a global body of prominence, is unable to give in to subsidy abolishment.
Ethical analysis pertains to the act being tested for its rationality on the basis of moral foundations (Hartman, 2002). The acts worth in contemporary times is dependent on the extent of the relevance, acceptance, and willingness to admit to commit to an ethical act without hesitation and refraining from unethical inclinations and acts. Unfortunately, ethics has increasingly become accustomed to literal use than in practical implementation in all acts, business and personal (Schanbacher, 2010). When ethical analysis of global institutions, global enterprises, and their motivation and intentional background stops and remain demotivated, polarisation of all means of livelihood and existence becomes common. This distorts the entire reason of establishing a liberal trade regime, absent of discrimination and immorality.
