Six years ago, a person close to my heart was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Her illness and subsequent treatment have a great influence on our relationship, and it was during this time when I begun reading about psychology and mental illnesses. I found humanistic psychology interesting and theories by Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow had a great impact on me. Humanistic psychology emphasizes on goodness of a person. Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow focused on the positive aspect of human nature. The motivation theory by Abraham Maslow and humanistic theory Carl Rogers by emphasized on the need to grow and fulfil one’s potential. A person highest need is the need for self-actualisation wherein they realise their full potential and ability. I feel that being empathetic and giving a person unconditional positive regard can help them grow and flourish. I strongly believe in the phenomenological approach that is subjective experiences of the person and how it influences the person. In a meta analytical study conducted by Zhang et al. (2017), the estimated point, 12-month and lifetime prevalence of Bipolar Disorder in mainland China were 0.09%, 0.17% and 0.11%, respectively. It has become common in people across China. Correct therapeutic interventions and medical treatment will help those suffering from mental illnesses. These treatment and measures can help people to reduce symptoms, recover and live a healthy life.
