Coca Cola had launched Coke Zero highlighting the fact that it had no calorie and no sugar and tasted similar to Coca Cola as compared to Diet Coke. Though this would add to its demand among consumers who were weight conscious or preferred to avoid sugar, there are certain ingredients in Coke Zero that poses to be risky for the health (Kannan and Govindarajan, 2017). Aspartame or NutraSweet though is a no calorie sugar substitute has a link to carcinoma and as per the FDA, individuals with genetic phenylketonuria disorder should completely avoid aspartame. It has also been observed that Coke Zero has no nutritional benefits like Vitamin C, fibre, protein, Calcium, iron or Vitamin A. This is a matter of concern, especially among young consumers who tend to substitute Coke Zero for milk that provide them protein, vitamin D or calcium (Lee et al., 2014). Consuming diet soda also adds to weight. Soft drinks that are sweet in taste like Coke Zero stimulate the appetite and thus the body of an individual is unable to estimate the number of calories that have to be consumed. The caffeine contained in Coke Zero is also risky for the consumer’s health. It is harmful for pregnant women and for people with other medical conditions that result in the body metabolising the caffeine slower than normal. Caffeine has side effects that are not pleasant like irritability, restlessness, and sleep difficulty among others.
