What I perceive as the first major challenge is the challenge of the political thinking of the country. For instance, an Economist article reads that “Mr. Xi seems to see the new Silk Road as a way of extending China’s commercial tentacles and soft power. The president has endorsed his predecessors’ view that China faces a period of strategic opportunity up to 2020, meaning it can take advantage of a mostly benign security environment to achieve its aim of strengthening its global power without causing conflict”. If this were to be understood to be true in literal sense, then Chinese SMEs have a golden time with the OBOR. However, SMEs in China deal with a political inertia style of thinking where they act under the assumption. As long as the greatest leader in any situation is satisfied, then it will be possible to satisfy everybody else. While this works for SMEs in China, in international context, this is not the case.

As the OBOR connects different geographic regions, it follows that Chinese SMEs to make use of the most opportunities will have to connect with the different geographic regions. Satisfying the leaders of the nations is not enough for good business. In most democratic nations, it is not just the Presidential power that is supreme. There are different political hierarchies for Chinese SMEs to comprehend. Although globalization and internationalization in businesses have prepared the county, this is still not enough. It is critical for SMEs to learn more about adapting to a standard dealing when it comes to political structures. The Chinese political thinking could be more affiliated towards domain powers, however, standard dealing forms with other nations will require much smoother and flexible political thinking.
