“War capitalism” as Beckert presents is capitalist movement that took place because of privateering capitalists of the world. Beckert calls it as a war form of capitalism as he believed the privateering capitalists were armed. Beckert means that the capitalists were coercive. They systematically abused colonies of people, like the Indians and the Africans in order to push for the production support they required. War capitalism led to “imperial domination, the expropriation of vast territories, decimation of indigenous people’s theft of their resources, enslavement” (Beckert, 2015, p. 38).

The understanding of “war capitalism” is significant in two ways. Firstly, it presents the history of capitalist movements across continents. It starts with European trading units that bought cotton from Anatolia and Egypt. Now although Europe had the products, they lacked the trade movement. For the purpose of improved trade movement, they sought to create a commercial web with production entities at one end, and buyers at another. Implemented by the armed privateering capitalists, this then was the beginning of war capitalism. The second significance in understanding of the term is attributed to how the same war capitalism has led to the creation of the modern trading movement. Industrial capitalism and the latter economic environment are attributed to be the creation of war capitalism. However, in the current times, a more industrialized global economic is created where production and buyer’s interests are no longer restricted to a state.
