The form of study environment the student would seek is one in which professors and professor feedbacks will play an important role. As Griner and Sobol (2014) states that the professors would play a very critical role in improving the understanding of the student. There are often special problems and needs for the student. The instructor will give feedback and support in order to help the children address their difficulties (Ohio State University, 2016; Yoon and Portman, 2004).
Hence the effect of the feedback system for improving learning is understood. International students are usually self-motivated and hard working as well. Most times they only need a little help and support to cross over learning and curriculum adjustment barriers. The research in this context aims to make use of a qualitative research methodology using focus group style of interview for gathering data.
What importance do you attach to the feedback you receive from your tutors?In terms of feedback almost all students agreed that feedback was very important and this is similar to what is described in academic articles (Ohio State University, 2016). However, the way feedback was received has to change. Some students seem to perceive feedback in a much negative style. One of the focus group participants states this explicitly. The participant stated that the questions about feedback reminded them about an unpleasant experience.
They had an experience where assignments with more groundwork had resulted in lesser scores and assignments with less homework had resulted with more scores. The way the feedback was received showed a negative attitude of the students. The focus group was hence able to reveal the attitude of the student along with their opinion on what they thought about the feedback. Some students mentioned they get feedback with respect to improving their English. This is coherent with the findings of Yan and Berliner (2009) and Wan (2001). The majority of participants did agree that feedback was important and they found it encouraging.
Could you share with us some of the challenges you face in sticking to your study techniques? In terms of challenges, participants did feel that language was their foremost challenge. Almost all students brought the discussion back to English language. How they could translate their ideas and thinking into a proper form for everybody to understand seems to affect their study techniques a lot. This was once again coherent with the findings of Yan and Berliner (2009) and Wan (2001). Language observed in the answer for the feedback question and this one show that it could easily be the most challenging for the students. Once again, the students were more upfront in their opinions here.
