Distorted perceptions arise when people are put into a challenging situation where they would choose to err on the side of tradition rather than challenge it or accept it. In the story, there are many characters who had a chance to do the humane and sensible thing of informing Santiago clearly that he could be killed by the brothers. Even if people did not believe the threat of the brothers, they could have given him an adequate warning, enough to save him. However, many characters are seen to have some distorted perception because they are put into a new challenging situation. Unlike the Vicario brothers, who choose tradition in electing to kill Santiago, the other characters are caught in a dilemma between whether they should choose to take the news as a fact and treat it as a required tradition or whether they should challenge it as a required civil responsibility. For instance, Clotilde Armenta has given the information about the brothers to the Father. Father Amador receives this information. There is no proof to the effect that he has not received the information. He has indeed understood the information, but now he is in a state of dilemma. Firstly, the people in the story are from a place and setting where there are strong religious beliefs. People involved in sexual activity before marriage was not an acceptable thing, and even Father Amador, as a man of the cloth, would have forbidden such activities. However, killing someone is just as much a sin. So what form of tradition should have been followed, could have been a dilemma for Father Amador. Should he allow the brothers to continue with their faith as they believe they want honour and justice for their sister or alternatively should he stop them from killing? Now in this dilemma between religious and faith based traditions, Father Amador could have applied some common sense, reasoning and some humanity. This could have enabled him to go and stop the killing. Instead he chooses to be quite about the incident and then states that he was caught up with the arrival of the Bishop and hence he could not do anything.
