It was established as of the year 2016 that around 41 million children in the world who are under the age group of 5, were either overweight or were obese. The condition of obesity is not only observed in high income nations, but also is observed in developing nations and urban settings on a rapid scale. In 2016, it was established that around 340 million children and young adults were obese. They were in the age group of 5-19. In the ‘Measures of Australia’s Progress’ conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2010, around a quarter of Australian children were obese. This was around 600,000 children between the age group of 5 and 17 years (Australian Bureau of Statistics ABS, 2010). This was a sharp increase from 1995, when obesity was lesser by 5.2 percent, and in 2007, when it was lesser by 7.5 percent. Now the numbers are more (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare AIHW, 2017). Almost 2 in 3 adults are obese and 1 in 4 children are obese, resulting in a record number of obesity related operations to reduce both immediate risks and long-term risks in health for the children (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare AIHW, 2017). In this context, it becomes pertinent to understand the causes of obesity. Eating behaviour, genetics and more are broad categories of causes. A more specific cause as identified in research literatures like Papandreou et al., (2013) and James & Kerr (2005) is soft drinks. The authors and research literature on the subject, term these soft drinks as sweetened sugary beverages SSBs. The essay aims to highlight these SSBs as one of the prominent cause of childhood obesity in children of school going age. The essay discusses the effects of such obesity and what could happen if SSBs were not brought under control.
