To evaluate the temporality of narrative, the comparison is done with the duration of the events with the perspective of the author. There is no “actual” duration that is present in the story. Even though the story is about the reference done based on 3 weeks of events, there is retrospection with the number of years in the past. Nevertheless, there is grasping of the tempo of the narrative theme which is formulated from key events in the story line. The unique tempo of the narrative is made clear between the extreme contrasts that exist between the earlier times to the current times. The idea of frequency is also used to gain comprehension of the narrative temporality that is stems from repetition. These are taken together to gain comprehension of the temporal distortion (Spinks 45). The overt disruption of chronology is evident in the ways in which the author describes the story. There is an interesting modulation of the narrative pace and patterns of the condensation that is used to define the game with time that is played with the narrative theme. The story has an eclectic mix of events. There is retrospection and introspection that probes into the three-week adventure of the 11-year-old boy. The story starts as a frivolous storyline that gains depth. The result of the story is lithe and intense. It states the ways in which the magic of adolescence is exemplified and shows the readers how passing strangers can have a overwhelming impact in the developing of a person’s character. Ondaatje shows his profound knowledge of life in the story. The story is fictional and at the same time personal (Rauwerda 40). The strange dinner companions show the endless fascination. Moreover, these characters essay how people are influenced by each other along with change in their perceptions. There is an eclectic mix of eccentricity and serendipity. The story is compressed into twenty-one days. These escapades allude to the human comedy.
