SST theory includes various technological artefacts as evidence to prove its rational. In this essay, two such artefacts used to prove the worthiness of SST theory are- Bicycle and Smartphones. A better understanding of SST can be achieved by analyzing the development of Bicycles. In the research by Pitch and Bijker (1984), the “Penny Farthing” model of bicycle has been emphasized (Pinch & Bijker, 1987). This study determines how this model affects different groups of the society and leads to development of a new model by changing perceptions. The Penny Farthing model of bicycles was constructed in the Victorian Era and used to be considered useless when compared to new bicycle models used today. The users of this model were adventurous, young people who considered bicycle as a medium of adventure sports rather than as simple mode of transportation.

The non-users of this model were defined as the other group as they considered bicycle as a mode of transportation and not adventure sport. Thus, the technology involved two relevant groups – users (adventurous young people) and non-users (elderly people and females who believed this technology to be unsafe and dangerous). This difference in perception is defined as interpretative flexibility. The superior technology of bicycle began fading away as social forces perceiving it as more dangerous and non-sensible artefact, strengthened. Penny Farthing model thus ended with the construction of an ordinary bicycle, being used till date, due to the dominance of society towards a reliable and safer technological innovation. This proves the significance of SST model that social choices are crucial in shaping technology and it is the solution to social problems (Pinch & Bijker, 1987).
