Six years ago, a person close to my heart sadly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It was during this time when I first exposed to the field of psychology and the study of mental illness. Though I did not know it at the time, I became particularly interested in the humanistic and motivational theories of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. What resonated with me was, this notion that a fulfilled life resulted from the quest to maximize one’s unique individual potential. I somewhat agree that personal change and growth can only come through self-exploration and empathy. This personal experience made me want to be a small instrument of change for the people who are struggling with mental disorders to have a better quality of life 。I remember this person who was suffering from bipolar where she would have unrealistic dreams. In particular, I want to study more about the mind and the human behavioural process. I want to conduct statistical analysis and document my findings so that it is useful for others as well. I want to specialize in abnormal psychology, developmental psychology and in behavioural psychology.
