The reason that I am applying for medical physics is because this course deals with human anatomy, I am fascinated about applying the theoretical notions and using technology for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. I am initially drawn to this field when I visited hospital with my mother when she had her ultrasound scan, which was an interesting and eye-opening experience. I was curious of how the cold gel used on the skin aided in the imaging process and how an image inside the body. When I research about the topic, I was able to determine that by sending an ultrasound by the use of the transducer. In this case the ultrasound reflected back when it hits a boundary between tissues with different acoustic impedance. From this, the transducer is used for the detection the reflected ultrasound to generate an image, and the cold gel used was a coupling material that used to match the acoustic impedance between air and the skin. Nevertheless, the answer I found was not complete, there is still more that I want to learn about. After seeking advice from my tutor, he introduced me medical physics, where I can learn more about the physics of the human body and how physics concepts can be applied on medicine and healthcare.
