The learner’s internal cognitive concepts are formed from their experiences. Consider the experiential learning cycle where the learner (myself) has concrete experiences. The concrete experiences with respect to my coursework are many. The experience is a unique one or it could be the reinterpretation of an existing experience. The second step is the reflective observation. In reflective observation, the new experience is analyzed and the inconsistencies between experience and understanding of the experience are the basis of reflection for the learner. In this reflection, the learner will then conceptualize their thinking. This is the third step in Kolb’s theory of experiential learning. Based on abstract conceptualization, according to Kolb, a more formative idea of the experience is formed.

Instead, the experience is considered as something of a concept that could be applied in future, or avoided in future. The abstract concept is then applied actively in experimental states where the learner can apply them to new world situations. It is in active experimentation that the user can improve on the subject. According to Kolbs, the generalization and abstraction that leads to the formulation of newer concepts is what leads to future learning as they are applied in hypothetical situations.
