Weaponization of artificial intelligence has been considered as one of the major ethical and moral, technological challenges of this century. There is an inherent danger in using AI and robotics. Many researchers have warned that it could increase a revolution in warfare this threatening people all over the world. In such a case scenario, it seems more sensible to stop the form of autonomy that AI weaponry can have. It is better to not make them more independent of a human user. Like a game, it is better to have some form of user-control in AI. AI weapons must not be given complete freedom.
In understanding the disadvantages of using AI as a main force, real world and fictitious examples could both be used. Consider fictitious world examples as seen in the movie “Terminator” and “I Robot”. In the movie, “Terminator”, robots are preprogrammed to complete some actions. However, the AI element used in these robots would mean that they can make independent decisions. The level of autonomy given to these AI systems is much more compared to the autonomy guaranteed for only a radar gun or a person operated drone. In the case of the terminator, the robots which are programmed and given independence to make decisions do not understand the value of human lives. For example, in the movie, the name of the main robotic creation is “the terminator” which terminates things, meaning that it kills things. The way human life is understood and evaluated is much different from how it is understood and evaluated in the terminator. In fact, it is presented in an almost crude sense. There is no ethical understanding of how their actions will harm humans. This is the case of AI devices. Artificial intelligence in the case of weapons could probably work more strategically, but it will not understand the human value system.
In the case of the movie “I Robot”, when a robot has a chance to rescue some people in a car crash, it uses an algorithm to understand who has the better chances of living if they were recovered. Even when someone pleads to the robot to rescue someone else, it still ends up rescuing the one which its algorithm suggests as having the greater chance of living. Life is not something that robots understand.
