The first step to be taken as a care provider and registered nurse is to meet John and hear his problems and frustration. Lending an empathetic ear and hearing out his problems would provide an insight into what needs to be done. The next step is to inform him about the problem, its causes and how it can be resolved (Schultz, 2014). This includes mentioning to him the time, it would take and the steps involved in the treatment including rest and change in diet, medication and exercise. Only then, it would be possible to help him stay away from frustration. In order to resolve the issue of depression, it is important to make John believe that his situation is curable and that he will not have to go on with exercise and pain killers for long if he takes appropriate care (Schultz, 2014). At the same time, rehabilitation for a very short period will help him meet patients suffering from similar problems and help him be motivated to work towards resolving his situation. Based on this, the two priorities while visiting John include:
Helping him gain complete information or maximum information about the illness
Convince him to visit rehabilitation in order to meet patients with similar problems and are experiencing improvement in their health
These aspects can help the patient obtain better motivation and to look forward to getting well. It becomes important for him to ensure that there is sufficient care which he takes in order to help his health improve (Russell, 2015). In case of developing a situation analysis, it would help the nurse be better prepared for the situation and conversation. Moreover having identified, the priorities will help ensure that the nurses’ encounters with the patients are a motivating and goal oriented one. These aspects help develop a strong level of growth among patients with regard to understanding of their situation and being able to deal with it (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2005).
Nursing as a profession involves focused empathy. It requires understanding the situation of the patient and helping him take better care of himself. For this, a nurse has to impart information and awareness to the patient in order to help him be able to take care of himself. Moreover, there is a need to ensure that the patient is motivated and not depressed at all times in order to provide sustainable treatment and health care (Schultz, 2014). If this does not occur, then it is quite likely that the patient would lose faith and be frustrated soon. Moreover, it is essential that there be an effective level of understanding about the level of illness of the patient which in this case is severe. It becomes essential to explain to the patient the need for taking care of himself, and what would be the all effects of over exertion in case of chronic pain due to spinal stenosis, and degeneration of the left hip (Schultz, 2014).
It is essential that nursing education is formalized so that it is possible to ensure better empowerment of nurses in medical and health care practices, as this can help build better understanding about the psychological conditions of patients and ensuring that they are helped accept their condition better (Chiarella, 2012). Empowering nurses have helped encourage research based practices and its adoption which leads to stronger quality management in health care, and so it should be ensured that there is delivery of a strong level of evaluation and measurement in order to help measure the level of change and improvement in the health levels of the patient (Watson, 1979). Nurses with formal education are better capable of performing well and ensuring higher accuracy in dealing with patients as well as managing health care issues, and so a qualified and experienced nurse are essential for this case and its resolution (Orem, Taylor & Renpenning, 1995).
