The dual approaches that are deductive and inductive approaches are used by a researcher when conducting a research. Both the approaches are important and useful (Elo & Kyngäs, 2008). The deductive approach tests and analyzes the theories or the hypotheses wherein the inductive approach tests and implements new theories and hypotheses. Deductive approach defines the quantitative structure in a better manner; hence, the present work would make use of the deductive approach, which is the most suitable approach for the present work of research (Hyde, 2000).
Limitation of the investigation are that, firstly, validity of the study in the practical and rational business environment is doubtful as it does not completely reflect the exact picture of the family firms operating in the Chinese economy. Secondly, the respondents might be influenced by the other subjective elements, such as the image of the firm, the relationship with the business person operating the business and so on. Thirdly, the element of time was an important factor because the respondents were not in the mood to answer the actual picture of the business through a set of questions and it may not reflect the exact picture of the business (Sekaran, 2006).
This provides the study a proper structure and also the selection of the methods used for the study is justified (Yin, 2013). The discussion of the different methods which would be used in the present study is done with the objective of fulfilling the purpose of the research and for the better comprehension of the topic selected for the research. In addition, the limitations of the study would also be discussed in a brief manner.
An exploratory research methodology is used where the research problem is not identified in the right manner (Creswell & Clark, 2007; Yin, 2003). This methodology best defines the structure of the present report as the understanding of the topic, “What does Chinese family firm rely on to realize innovation?”, is a complex phenomenon and the identification of the specific factors using this method would aid the current study to understand where exactly the problem persists.
The mixed methodology is used for the current work which comprises of both the qualitative and quantitative methods (Dörnyei, 2007). These methods would aid the work in the collection of the data using the survey questionnaire method and the interview method, in a comprehensive manner from the respondents chosen for the survey. The quantitative analysis of the report has been performed using the survey questionnaire method.
