If I go through my course journal, then I would say that self-disclosure has a relation with the communication process. It helps in bringing out the hidden fact about one’s Self. It may, for example, include a negative experience that people or rather the individual has expressed before, but never told to anyone. Hence, through the process of self-disclosure, the individual could speak about those negative incidents and occurrence. Self-disclosures can be carried out through different ways, either through the verbal way, where one speak out about one’s own self or through the non-verbal way (Derlaga and Berg, 2013).
I have used the Johari Window Model to find out about my Open, Blind, Hidden and the Unknown area. Thus, I have carry out communication with those who know me and have gathered feedback from them. Before revealing about myself, I want discuss about the four components of the Johari Window model and those are stated below:
The Open Area: It includes the information that is known both to the individual and to the other people who knows the individual. The amount of information that is known to the others often is very relational by nature. Consequently, if the person is very close, then he/she may have more information about the individual, which the others may not have (Kashian et al., 2017).
The Blind Area: It includes the information that is known to the others but not to the individual. For example, a person has certain amount of leadership capabilities that are known to his friends and the near colleagues but the person himself is not much aware of the fact.
The Hidden Area: The hidden area includes those things that are known to the individual but not to those with whom he/she has a relation.
The Unknown Area: It includes those facts that are neither known to the individuals nor to the others who have relation with the individual or know the individual. Derlaga and Berg (2013) are of the opinion that through the process of questionnaire and feedback, the individuals should try to reduce the size of the unknown area.
Thus, I can say that I had revealed most of the hidden facts to my closer friends and colleagues. The Open Area of my Johari Window proves the fact. I, however, have to reduce the Blind Area, by talking to those people who knows me. I should find out those facts that are not known to me but to the others.e
