对人的活动功能的限制可以称为残疾人。它也包括精神或感官的限制。残疾可能是由意外、创伤甚至是基因造成的。残疾的数量可以是暂时性的，也可以是永久性的，可以是完全残疾或部分残疾。根据澳大利亚统计局的数据，澳大利亚有400多万残疾人。在澳大利亚，大约18%的澳大利亚人有残疾。澳大利亚政府开始采取措施解决残疾问题。残疾人就业率为47.75%，与其他国家相比有较大的差距。然而，由于澳大利亚较高的残疾人就业率为69% (Australian Network of disability, 2016)，残疾人的就业率必须提高。
Restriction of mobility functions of a person can be termed as person with disability. It includes mental or sensory restrictions too. The disabilities may be caused by an accident, trauma or even genetics. The volume of disability may be temporary nature of permanent nature and it may be total disability or partial disability. As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 4 million people in Australia suffering from disability. In Australia, around 18% of Australians have disability. The Australian Government initiated steps to address the disability. The employment rate with disability is 47.75% which is considerably agreed comparatively other countries. However, rate of employment for the people with disability must be increased as the higher employment rate of people with disability in Australia shows 69% (Australian Network of Disability, 2016).
In order to protect and help the persons with disability, the FaHCSIA i.e. the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs created policies and framework with an object that the people with disability should be able to access the more recruitment and get employment. It is noticed that the disabled people’s representation in employment considerably less, the Department started making policies to increase the workforce with disabled persons in government agencies. The objectives of the policy include that the disabled job applicants should receive fair treatment, promotion of positive work environment, retention of the employees with disability, increase number of people in Department’s work force, training and information dissemination etc.
While focusing Recruitment and Employment, the Department established links with the universities so that the disabled graduates will be aware of the opportunities. In this regard, a Disability Access Coordinator specifically designed to develop close contacts of disabled community and thereby profiles of the personnel will be updated with the employer’s data base. Further, the Department also conducts various shows such as disable day, events, celebrations, international day, etc. targeting huge gathering of disabled persons. Through such event orientation, efficient data base will be developed. The developed date base also shared with the outside agencies including departments, Educational institutions etc.
