There are a number of reasons that have been given by different people while answering that question why a third political party has never been successful in the US in presidential elections. One reason that is commonly given in this regard is the fact that traditionally, these political parties have emerged from the radical thinkers, as a result of a feeling of frustration and therefore these parties are not supported by the more reasonable thinkers. In the same way, one more reason that is generally given while answering the question that why a third political party has not been successful in the presidential elections is that these parties do not have a lasting leader (Brewer and Stonecash, 2006). Another reason that is generally given in this regard is the lack of resources as well as the lack of influential and significant supporters of these parties. Therefore, financial resources, influential leaders and at the same time business affiliations are very important for the success of a political party in the US, particularly at the presidential level. Moreover, the third political parties like the Reform Party, Libertarians and the Constitution Party suffered from a disadvantage due to the federal campaign finance laws that are applicable to the parties who can take part in presidential debates. At the same time, another reason that can be given in this regard is that third political parties in the US receive much less attention by the media as compared to the two major political parties (Aldrich and Rohde, 2001).
