In relation to Facebook, there are some concerns which I have over surveillance and privacy. The first is that all the public information is used by Facebook and it provides the same to advertisers. This is to ensure that advertisers are able to use this information and customers can get what they require. The information provided by Facebook to these advertisers consists of a wide range of data such as background of the person, their photos, the searches and pages that they like. This makes me really uncomfortable. At times, accessing some pages on Facebook is a necessity for users. When information is provided to advertisers, the information of the users is at stake leading towards privacy issues. This also leads towards surveillance issues as quoted by David Lyon in his article on surveillance. He states that acknowledging surveillance society as a modernity product helps in avoiding 2 essential traps (Lyon, 2008). These traps are known as surveillance as a result of malign plot. The plot is hatched by evil powers and surveillance is noted as the sole product of newer technologies. Facebook however takes surveillance as a desire to obtain efficiencies, coordination and also control (Lyon, 2008). For example, Facebook states that it has to amass individual information over a larger scale. The company however is doing this to remain competitive. Another issue that I have faced with the company is from the perspective of being a student. Student privacy concerns are at the forefront for me. Posting illegal information has been a trend on Facebook because it gives people power. Another issue I found is that my account was wrongfully suspended and private identification of my account was coerced. This was because I did not give up the information related to private identification (Lyon, 2008). I did not give up such information and suffered restriction of permanent nature. There was no alternate way to retrieve the same. It further becomes worthy noting that Facebook doesn’t need releasing this information when users first sign for the profile. With such type of individual data, there is always a potential of serious harm to individuals (Lyon, 2008). The move I will say is not only presumptuous but also dictatorial in nature with privacy related offensive invasion. On the other hand, there are other famous websites which ask for identity verification either through phone or sending a confirmation mail over e-mail.
