Firstly, people speak differently in different parts of the US because of how their culture and background is linked with what they speak. The family of Dutch people speaks English much differently from others. Germanic influences on language lead to people speaking English much differently. These differences exist across all parts of the US. To prove these accent differences, the documentary starts off with people from different regions reciting the same rhyme, “Mary had a little lamb”. The rhyme is recited by all, but was recited in a different accent. A person from Virginia recites it much differently than one from Pennsylvania or from Mississippi. New York people spoke differently. Black people had a different accent from the White and so on. Now watching the documentary, it is easy to understand how people influences on their accent does not only draw from their own background. For instance, German influences are observed in the speech of the Penn Dutch. These differences are hence incorporated from cultures and races different from their own. Also, people who believe their grandkids speak a different accent. “People from New York or Philadelphia, and Virginia especially, our grandkids in Virginia and they have that Virginia dialect, you know, I have to listen twice to catch on, you know, they’ve got that dialect, you know”. It leads to the understanding that even people of the same family might not speak the same dialect because they end up in different geographic regions. This gives them an accent different from others.
