The concept of “mental well-being” can be interchangeably used with “mental health”. Sometimes, both the terms are combined to state mental health and wellbeing. Mental wellbeing is considered as the significant part of the health and therefore, it has been included by WHO, in the definition of health. WHO defines health and wellbeing as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 2017). WHO has stressed on the factor that physical, mental and social functioning of an individual are interdependent and mental well being is the state of balance between the individual, environment and others. WHO define mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” (Galderisi et al., 2015, p. 213).

This definition of mental health explains that mental wellbeing is the key aspect of foundation of effective functioning for an individual. Therefore, mental health and well-being is not just the absence of the mental illness, but it is about achieving the state of wellbeing. The wellbeing can be affected by many challenging life situations and stressful events (Department of Education, 2016). This is the reason that certain children are at higher risk of developing mental health problems. These risks could be associated with family, community or life events. Some of the risk factors that have been identified in the literature are genetic influences, learning disabilities, temperament problems, specific development delays, communication difficulties, low self-esteem, physical illness, parental conflicts, family breakdown, rejecting and hostile relationships emotional neglect or emotional abuse, lack of parental attachment, as well as death and loss (Department of Education, 2016).
