The difference in the ritual is also found among other communities of Gypsies. Such as, as in the Hungarian Romani tribe, the funeral rituals are carried out by females, where the body of the deceased is washed and clothed by the females of the family and it is covered with white sheet (same like Indian culture) (Edden et al, 2011); Matras, 2008). However, the actual burial ceremonies are carried out by the priest or the authorized official like the case of non-Gypsy community. Another similarity of the Gypsy community with the Indian communities is that till the one year is completed of burial and final mass is held, these people refrain from cutting their hair and display grief for a year.
The Gypsies and the travelers display significant difference between male and female through their traditions and beliefs. The non-Rom females are accepted as the brides in the Romanies, but non-Rom grooms are not accepted in the community and husband and wife both are “cast out of the extended family unit” (Matras 2008, p. 7).The Gypsy communities are considered to have highly complex social culture because the Roma population is highly scattered among the other population in different regions. Their culture and social structure is influenced by the interaction with the other cultures.
This is the reason that Roma’s do not have any official faith that makes their social culture more complex. In the contemporary world, the Gypsies and the travelers have adopted the predominant culture of the country they are settled in. FRUA have described this community as “many stars scattered in the sight of God” (Bradford, 2017, p. 5). The Roma groups have adopted different religious beliefs, as some of them are Muslims, Catholic or Pentecostal, while some are Protestants, Baptist and Anglican.
