Time management was one of my critical goals. In the pickle jar theory of time management, managing one’s time is understood in the context of filling up a pickle jar with rocks, small stones and water. The first lesson I learnt from the pickle jar theory is to focus on the major elements. Now the major elements in my work schedule are my day to day activities as an accounts payable junior clerk. In this my major works, the rocks in the jar are ensuring invoices which are matched up with their respective numbers and are verified before being set to my higher up. Similarly, there were duties with respect to applying discounts and more. When I was struggling with time management in the new workplace, I thence realized I was focusing on too many things at once. Firstly, it was expected of me to send status updates. The status updates could be called the small rocks. Now sending a status update for every work was taking a toll.

I learned to club my updates, especially my updates with different department heads, I clubbed them together to ensure they got a continuous picture. This not only saved me time, but also made sure I did not have to file further replies by way of clarifications. Secondly, the marbles in the jar are those things that have to be one too, but then it need not be done, it could be delegated or postponed. Now this is where I caught myself micromanaging. I could see that even when I had daily tasks getting piled up, I would not seek for help with a smaller task that could potentially be handled by my teammate with no further instructions from me. Delegation did not come easy, but I think it was more because of my competitive spirit where I wanted to learn everything for myself. In future I should improve on my delegation skills. The sand in the bottle, according to the time management matrix are irrelevant, but could be fit in.If there is some extra time, I think I used such time for team rapport building.
