Since recent years, there has been a shifted focus towards using natural enemies that destruct water hyacinth such as plant pathogens. The aim of any such method is not the eradication of weed, but reduction of its abundant existence such that it is not problematic. While there are a number of native enemies of the species, two water hyacinth moth and South American weevil beetles have shown effectiveness to control the weed in a number of nations such as Benin, Papua New Guinea, Louisiana, Kenya and Zimbabwe in the longer run. An additional tiny insect was identified by scientists in South America, namely Megamelus scutellaris (Masto et al., 2013). This insect is specific to the host of water hyacinth and it does not end up threatening any important species, economically or natively. On the other hand, weevils end up reducing the vigor of water hyacinth by decreasing seed and flower production, vegetative reproduction, and plant size. They are responsible for facilitating the ingress and transfer of deleterious micro-organisms in association with weevils (bacteria and fungi) present in the plant tissues.
