Both Mrs. Moore and Adela are disappointed with the kind of life when they have to live in the genteel colony of the British Empire in Chandrapore. They feel horrified with the attitude of the fellow British people towards the Indian people and their lack of interest to develop India. Both Mrs. Moore and Adela refuse to participate in the usual routine of Britishers in India which includes the games such as cricket, polo and spending valuable times at the clubs. They broke the usual routine and went outside the British Empire buildings.
With the help of the local superintendent Richard Fielding they meet an Indian scholar Godbole. They are pleased by his words of wisdom. They also meet a hardworking and a financially impoverished doctor named Aziz who both admires and hate the Britishers. He gets carried away because of the friendliness of Mrs. Moore and Adela. He then takes Mrs. Moore and Adela on extraordinary outings to the Malabar caves which actually cannot be afford by him. During this outing, he is accused of rape.
The screenplay of the movie is remarkable and has carried the entire story of the novel in the great manner. Many of the dialogues of the movie have been taken directly from the novel written by Foster. The trial of Aziz in the novel has been much more outrageous than it had been in the novel. The scene which describes the uncharacteristic behavior of Mrs. Moore before the Aziz’s trial has been displayed in a more peculiar manner in the movie than the novel. The movie is less mysterious and more cryptic than the novel. It is also more wonderful and a provocative in comparison to the novel (Parry and Benita 27). It gives the full description of the vivid characters. Each and every actor has played his role in the perfect manner.
The most important act of Aziz has been performed by Victor Banerjee. He has replicated the character which includes foolishness, bravery, honor and anger. The role of Adela has been written in a prettier manner in comparison to the novel.
