Utilitarianism concept is a notion that is worried about the end or the outcomes of a situation (Pacillo 511). It considers a single notion of bringing the greatest good in a society. It would essentially question if a particular situation brings the greatest good or outcome. Having an abortion could be due to a variety of reasons and can be justified based on other parameters. Some of the reasons for proposing abortions could be financial, health of the mother, health of the child or the fact that the child could be conceived from rape. In these conditions, the greatest good or the best possible outcome could be abortion. In other social situation, women can stand to gain from having a child and in this case abortion would be considered illegal. The greatest good or outcome in a situation does not necessarily mean that it would be the right moral path. This theory of utilitarianism can be confusing and may not always point to the notions of ethics. Another criticism for this theory is that the greatest good or the best possible outcome determination is based on the moral stand and perception of the individuals and is subject to change based on the populist views held by the society. Applying this notion to the act of abortion can be confusing and cannot completely answer the issues of abortion. In this case, the deontology of Justice in Kantian ethics or morally can be probed.
