The management opportunity of becoming a “learning organization” is significant for the Lippo Group given that they are fast growing locally and would need to expand. The Lippo Group has faced many issues in the past and in current times. There is lawsuit against Riady. Riady has faced an ethical breach suit. The company is facing issues because some claim the company works to convert people to a different faith. Then there are also issues of culture.
Now in this context, the company has still managed to expand locally, now the reasons and ways of how they have managed to be successful is something that has to be incorporated as a knowledge database. The organization in the context of expansion should make use of more feedbacks, constructive and critical and use this to self-learn and improve. The strong leadership of Riady could be an asset here to achieve this.
It is worthy of further research, as the organization is more than just a good leadership. There are employees who are structural blocks in the organization. When leaders or managers leave, then the organization must have well trained and learned employees to take their place. Especially in a very challenging environment like Indonesia, it might be necessary for Riady to invest in a “learning organization”.
In management context, when such opportunities are not taken advantage of, then the organization could just as easily enter a stagnant phase. Research shows that leaders of organizations might state that they learn from their failures but might not be focused much on improving learning opportunities (Gino & Staats, 2016). An organization that is successful would become stagnant or redundant over the years. In the case of the Riady study, there are many issues that the organization has faced, and these issues could be tapped into as learning opportunities.
